Tasting Notes: Jammy Cherry • Toffee • Chocolate • Fresh Berry
A sweet, fruit-forward washed coffee from the Kiamugumo Factory in Kirinyaga. Juicy, syrupy and layered, this lot opens with jammy cherry and fresh berry flavours, followed by toffee sweetness and chocolate depth. Lively acidity brings lift, balancing the syrupy sweetness for a bright and satisfying cup.
Located in central Kenya around Mount Kenya, Kirinyaga is known for its rich volcanic soils, plentiful rivers and expressive, fruit-forward coffees. The Kiamugumo Factory was established in the 1970s and is operated by the New Ngariama Farmers Cooperative Society. Smallholder members grow coffee alongside other crops, delivering ripe cherries to the factory for sorting and processing.
Kenyan washed processing typically begins with ripe cherries being pulped, then fermented before thorough washing. A further soaking stage is common before the coffee is spread on raised beds to dry. This approach helps bring clarity and definition to the cup, allowing Kiamugumo’s juicy fruit character, lively acidity and layered sweetness to shine.
